great industrial!
This album is a true gem and it's style is industrial reminiscent of Front 242. I love whatever processing is used on the first track. The electronic instruments sound great, but more importantly the song writing is creative and inspiring. One of my favourites on Jamendo.

A Melancholy Morsel

BioCarbon13 have put together an engaging assembly of tracks with their latest effort, Cheese Ball.

Many of the forgers of sound in the industrial/gothic/ebm/darkwave genres create dark, melancholy, brooding music, and BioCarbon13 are no exception. But these guys have a fascinating way of doing so that both incorporates elements of their apparent influences, pays homage, and yet still forms an original sound that is all their own.

At times, whilst listening to this CD, I was alternately reminded of many great artists of the past: Robert Smith, Love & Rockets, Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, classic Delerium, Frontline Assembly, Front 242.

In "Not Enough", iG's vocals are like a hybrid between Bauhaus' Peter Murphy and Type O Negative's Peter Steele, taking on the tonality of Murphy, and the vampiric qualities of Steele.

If I have one complaint about this album though, it is that some of the tracks feel like the vocals were not mixed down well. They come in a little too strong, and overpower the rest of the music a bit too much at times. One of the most prominent examples of this was at the first introduction of Igor's vocals in the title track, "Cheese Ball". The vocals come in just a bit too strong, and lend the feeling that they are hovering above the rest of the music, rather than blending ito it. This certainly doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment of the CD, however.

As is common for their genre, most of the tracks on this album rely on faster basslines, programming, and guitar samples, with synths that lend a haunted, ethereal overlay to the music. While that can be quite enjoyable, and provides the album just enough punch to be danceable, there was one track on Cheese Ball that deserved special commendation. "Variations In Still Life" is a daring foray into a somewhat different style. This scaled-back track is beautiful and melodic, while still retaining the dark theme that defines BioCarbon13. With pained vocals that sound warped and wavered - as if Igor is singing from some deep cold watery depths in which he has drowned - and what is probably the most melancholy track on the album, this song is also strangely, compellingly beautiful at the same time.

Truth be told, I didn't take to this CD very well the first time I listened to it. But to do a proper review, I felt I had to understand the music a bit more. After 2 full listens, I started to get it. I've probably listened to it 4 or 5 times now, and find myself absorbed into their sound more with each listen. Like a papercut that takes a few minutes to start stinging, BioCarbon13's Cheese Ball required some time to fully engage me, but I now find myself drawn into their musical soundscapes with interested fascination.

BioCarbon13's "Cheese Ball" gets a very respectable 3 1/2 out of 5 glowsticks.

02.16.2006 Negative Impact v0.1 - review by the Smother.net
Bringing together a variety of electronic artists, the Negative Impact compilation boasts some stellar artists that transcend normal electronica. N.U.T.E. evokes images of Marilyn Manson while AM22 does it industrialized EBM style. Some of the tracks need some help production wise as theyre not mixed to perfection but thats only because Im a tireless nit-pick when it comes to electronic music. BioCarbon13 is perhaps the best of the bunch with their three tracks of intriguing industrial. Pick this up and support independent electronic acts.

6.30.2005 Igorist - review by the Inderground Press
Rated:
BioCarbon13 is the conception of Igor`s inborn need to reflect on his life and the consequences of existence. His peculiar style of music and eccentric voice, makes BioCarbon13 an unconventional art piece, composed of a dark and brooding Goth temperament, an Electronic blood flow and various other influences. The mood is dim and measured - a midnight lullaby with a twist.

06.20.2005 Interview conducted by the Underground Press
U.P. Q) How did you become part of the underground scene and how long have you been in the music industry?
Ig A) I was born in Kiev , Ukraine , into a musical family, my mother started me with the piano lessons when I was six and I continued to play ever since in part because playing music became a sort of a therapy for me. In 1979 my family and I moved to US and in the early 80's, I joined my first band. I was always into discovering new things so it was natural for me to get interested in punk and new wave at first and then move to what we used to call Death Rock and now known as Goth music. However, I doubt that Goth would agree on what Goth really is

Igorist

U.P. Q) What do you do for a living and what do you do in your spare time?
Ig A) For a living I work as market analyst as well as the IT support for my firm and in my spare time I mostly play music, but also rollerblade, play hockey, and recently go into watching anime.
U.P. Q) What do you hate the most the most and what is your passion?
Ig A) I hate hypocrites and posers, as for my passion, it should be obvious.
U.P. Q) What is in your CD player at the moment?
Ig A) I migrated from CDs to MP3 player. Now, I'm listening to Dismantled, KiEw, as well as Rush hour, Trance stimuli, and transformer. There are lot of things that can be learned from the techno and trance DJs.
U.P. Q) List your top 5 bands of all times and favourite songs.
Ig A) David Bowie and Iggy Pop are my all time favorite singers and composers. To pick five songs just from their catalog as my favorites would be an impossible tusk. But if I were to leave them off the list, as well the classics, then I would have to say:
a. A-pop Kathy's Song
b. VNV First light
c. Bauhaus Slice of life
d. Sisters of Mercy Lucretia my reflection
e. Front 242 - Headhunter
U.P. Q) What is your opinion on the politics in the underground scene, if any?
Ig A) Politics is an inevitable evil. Like a ten headed hydra, you cut off one and two new will spring out.
U.P. Q) Favourite movie?
Ig A) Apocalypse now
U.P. Q) How would you describe yourself?
Ig A) I leave describing me for others for two reasons:
1. I am couldn't hope to be as objective, and
2. If self definition depends on what one dose then I best stick to doing things rather then trying to describe what I wish to do.
U.P. Q) What is band life like?
Ig A) I write and record music and my band mates remix it for live shows. So what you hear on my website, so far is what my band mates build on.
U.P. Q) What is your life philosophy?
Ig A) When my time will come to part this earth I wish not to regret a thing that I did or did not do while I had the chance.

BioCarbon13 is the creative project by Igor a dear friend of mine. He will be playing on August 28th, 2004 at 836 w. Aldine, Chicago IL. Ig hails from Chicago, IL and is starting to play several venues. His new album Igorist has just come out, you can download it from his site. This album is quite exceptional and different from his other older which were much more electronically based. This new album is very dark and brooding and much more gothic sounding. Track six- Trust, Ig sings about a long lost love saying, "did you know when I dreamt of you?" very thought provoking and moving. Track eight- Claudia is a gothic love song and reminds me of Xymox's "Louise". Very slow and melodic and sad and down to the point. This gentleman sings his very heart and soul of the one that got away and wasn't meant to be as he expresses. We end this album with Track ten- "Fade to Black" that really compliments this exceptional album. Ig sings to us, "My reflection in the mirror as I fade to Black" and has us practically falling into a deep, dark trance as we listen to this. This perhaps could be the dense floor hit but the rest of the album has a lot to promise for dense floors worldwide. Do something different dial 13 and listen, you might just not be the same again.

You might be amused to learn that whilst listening to Cheetah rather loudly on my way home today I crashed into another car. No shit. Fortunately no one got hurt but how's THAT for a review! LOL! "So engaging I plowed down 3 pedestrians and caused a five car pile up".

"BioCarbon13, has a very unique approach to music, I don't even really know what to think of this particular track, unfortunately on my 56K dial-up this is the only one I had time to download! Its very bizarre. I don't know what language it's being "sung" in, but if you want to hear music that is composed with the sound of someone consistantly clicking on a key of a computer keyboard with a lullaby like male voice "singing" over top, you have to check this song out!
Rating: 7/10 (for creativity, I don't really enjoy the song)
